Victoria's India Strategy: Our Shared Future

The strong ties between India and Victoria will be further strengthened by ‘Victoria’s India Strategy: Our Shared Future’, which is designed to celebrate our personal connections with India and form the foundations for a mutually beneficial partnership.

India presents a significant opportunity for Victorian. It has the third largest and fastest growing economy in the world and is home to an estimated 400 million millennials, representing enormous potential for innovation, collaboration and demand for goods and services. Strong economic ties already exist led by trade and investment in international education, food and fibre and tourism.

Victoria is proudly home to the largest Indian population in Australia. More than 209,000 Victorians have Indian ancestry and the government is committed to strengthening and celebrating our personal connections with India.

The strategy has four specific target areas in which the government will build on Victoria’s close relationship with India to promote jobs growth and boost the local economy over the next ten years.

  • Increase goods exports to India from an annual average of AU$500 million over the last five years to  almost AU$1 billion
  • Grow the number of Indian postgraduate research students in Victoria by 25 per cent
  • Double the number of Victorian businesses engaged in India from 150 to 300
  • Grow expenditure by Indian visitors to Victoria from AU$367 million to AU$885 million

These commitments capitalise on Victoria’s expertise in health, liveability, education, creative industries and tourism as well as India’s constant drive to innovate and grow. They are bold and unprecedented goals that will boost the economy, create jobs and reinforce the reputation of Victoria and India as innovative leaders.
