Public Service Medal

The prestigious Public Service Medal (PSM) is national recognition of outstanding public service.

The PSM medal is part of the official Australian system of honours and awards that acknowledges public sector employees of the Commonwealth, state, territory and local governments who demonstrate excellence, leadership and innovation. 

Public servants are encouraged to nominate colleagues, staff or managers who exhibit genuinely outstanding achievement in the workplace and who inspire others to keep striving for better outcomes for the Victorian community.

Outstanding service could be shown through:

  • Service excellence to the public, or to external or internal clients
  • Innovation in developing a program, project or policy
  • Leadership, including as a member of a team  and/or
  • The achievement of more efficient processes, cost savings, improved products or better service delivery. 

Recipients are entitled to use the post-nominal initials PSM after their names to show that their outstanding service has been formally recognised. 

Recipients also attend an official investiture ceremony at Government House where they receive their medal.

Nomination Deadlines

Queen’s Birthday Honours List (June)

Closing date for nominations is 1 February each year (if that date falls on a weekend, then nominations close on the Monday immediately following).

Australia Day Honours List (26 January)

Closing date for nominations is 1 August each year (if that date falls on a weekend, then nominations close on the Monday immediately following).

Note that all nominations must be received by the PSM Committee Secretariat by close of business on the closing date. Nominations received after this time will not be considered.


All Public Sector employees of the Commonwealth, state, territory and local governments are eligible for the medal.

Members of the Defence Force and the police, fire, ambulance and emergency services cannot be nominated for the PSM as they are eligible for comparable awards.

The PSM is open to all levels of the public service and is not reserved for senior officers.

When completed, print the form, sign the nominator declaration and attach the necessary documents with your application.

Who Can Nominate?

Anyone can nominate as long as the nomination has been endorsed by the relevant Departmental Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (for nominations from government authorities and agencies) of the nominee.
