MADDEN SUPPORTS PLANS FOR GEELONG PLAYGROUND
The Bracks Government today encouraged supporters of a proposal to establish a regional playground in Geelong to resubmit a funding bid later this year.
The Minister for the Commonwealth Games, Sport and Recreation, Justin Madden, toured the proposed Eastern Gardens site today, describing the project as a fantastic concept.
“The project would invigorate Eastern Gardens as a recreation setting,” Mr Madden said.
Member for Bellarine, Lisa Neville, a vocal supporter of the proposed playground, described the project as having the potential to be a major drawcard in the region for local families and visitors.
“It also will fill a gap in the region because at present there are no playgrounds that cater for children or people with a disability,” she said.
Mr Madden said the Committee for Geelong and the project working group had consulted widely to create a playground design that would cater for people of all abilities.
“The other impressive aspect is that around half the projected cost for the project would be met by community groups and the local Rotary Club,” Mr Madden said.
“At the same time, a successful bid in the next State funding round through Sport and Recreation Victoria would result in a multi-tiered government partnership.
“This would see the State and Federal governments and at least one local council all pitching in funds.”
Mr Madden said by refining their project proposal, local backers of the playground could address any shortcomings identified in the unsuccessful bid for $200,000 from the State in the previous grant round.
“I can appreciate the disappointment at missing out for funds from Sport and Recreation Victoria, but I assure the Committee for Geelong and playground supporters that persistence with big-ticket projects often pays off,” he said.
Mr Madden said there was strong state-wide demand for
Community Facility Funding
for worthy major and minor projects every year.
“The South Western Region of Victoria received funds for two major projects, with an indoor facility at Camperdown getting approval on its third try. It has similarities to the playground project because it also enjoys tremendous community support,” he said.
State funding for a sprung floor at The Arena in Geelong was provided to ensure the basketball venue would be ready for the Commonwealth Games in March 2006.
Mr Madden said playground projects for 2004-05 had been strongly supported by the Bracks Government with $788,000 allocated to 15 projects across the State.
“In total since 2000-01, we have supported 60 playground projects with $3.7 million contributed through the Community Facility Funding program,” he said.
“This backing has enabled playground projects worth more than $7.8 million to proceed. Our aim is to encourage more people to enjoy active recreation in their local area.”
