FOLLOW THE SIGNS FOR AN EASIER RIDE AT FLINDERS ST STATION
New way-finding signage and electronic information displays will begin to be installed from today at one of Melbourne’s most famous public transport interchanges, the Minister for Transport, Peter Batchelor, said today.
Mr Batchelor said the introduction of new Metlink signage at Flinders Street Station would make it easier for passengers to navigate their way around the station, as well as transfer from one mode of transport to another.
“Thousands of people use Flinders Street station every day – it’s the heart of the metropolitan train system,” Mr Batchelor said.
“It’s vital to ensure clear and consistent information is available, particularly for infrequent travellers, so they can navigate the network with confidence.
“Users will be able to identify different modes of transport by colour - blue for train, green for tram and orange for bus.
“Consistent, easily identifiable signage allows people to use public transport more effectively and gradually Metlink will replace all of the old confusing signs and different logos across the metropolitan network with the new way-finding system.”
Electronic displays will also be installed at major platform entry points and other central locations around Flinders Street station.
“These will feature variable message information such as service alterations, platform changes or special services for major events,” Mr Batchelor said.
Acting Metlink CEO, Ms Anne Randall said Flinders Street Station was the first major city interchange to receive the new way-finding system
“So far, Metlink has installed new signage at eleven major suburban transport interchanges, along tram routes 70 and 109, along bus route 612 and at Doncaster’s ‘Park and Ride’ bus interchange,” Ms Randall said.
Mr Batchelor said the implementation of new signage across Melbourne’s public transport system was a massive project.
“Over the next few weeks, more than 450 signs will be installed at Flinders Street station alone. Metlink’s next signage works include CBD tram and bus stops and the installation of 175 signs at North Melbourne station,” Mr Batchelor said.
“By 2007, 209 train stations, 1800 trams stops and more than 25,000 bus stops will feature the new wayfinding system.”
For collectors of public transport memorabilia, Metlink will auction 10 Flinders Street Station platform signs on Ebay with the proceeds going to not-for-profit organisation Whitelion.
