FIRST FEMALE HEAD OF LIQUOR LICENSING IN VICTORIA APPOINTED
The Minister for Consumer Affairs, Ms Marsha Thomson, has announced the appointment of Sue Maclellan as the Director of Liquor Licensing, the first women Director to be appointed in the state’s history.
“I am very pleased to announce that Sue Maclellan has been appointed the Director of Liquor Licensing,” said Ms Thomson.
“Ms Maclellan has acted in the role for the past twelve months and in that time has had a significant impact on liquor licensing in Victoria.
“Ms Maclellan played a key role in the recent amendments to the Liquor Control Reform Act 1998 to further address underage drinking and to strengthen the enforcement powers of Victoria Police under the Act.
“She has a strong interest in working with key stakeholders such as Victoria Police, Councils, communities, government agencies and associations involved in harm minimisation strategies.
“The recent review of underage events in licensed premises was conducted by Ms Maclellan in conjunction with the Victoria Police, young people and the licensees. She achieved a balanced outcome that was welcomed by all involved.
“In exercising her independent functions Ms Maclellan has shown a commitment to ensuring a balanced outcome between the operation of Victoria’s liberal liquor laws and the need to reduce the misuse and abuse of alcohol.”
Ms Maclellan said she was looking forward to the challenges of this important role.
She said her initial priorities would be working with other agencies and youth to tackle underage drinking issues and issues surrounding late night venues. She also wants to work with her colleagues in other States and Territories on harmonising approaches to national problems.
The Director of Liquor Licensing appointment is for a five year term.
