$6.5 MILLION FOR SUSTAINABLE PROJECTS FOR VICTORIA

Environmentally friendly retirement villages, a sustainable street light project, an ecomuseum and an energy and water efficient dairy cleaning system are among the recipients of $6.5 million in Brumby Government funding for sustainability initiatives.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings announced the recipients of the Sustainability Fund grants at Heide Gallery in Bulleen today.

“A total of 34 projects will be funded under the third round of the Sustainability Fund to support initiatives that foster sustainable resource use and have economic and social benefits for Victorians,” Mr Jennings said.

“There was an overwhelming response to the third round, with more than 200 project applications received from businesses, community groups and local governments across Victoria.

"The recipients of these grants will deliver practical and affordable solutions to tackle climate change and help Victorians reduce our environmental impact.

“The Brumby Government is taking action to ensure climate change creates a climate of opportunity for Victoria.”

Treasurer John Lenders congratulated the recipients saying “The successful applications have put forward a range of exciting proposals and have established partnerships for long-term environmental change that are ready to put into action.”

“The Sustainability Fund provided the necessary financial support to help realise these ideas,” Mr Lenders said

“Established in 2004 using funds from the landfill levy, the Sustainability Fund has so far provided over $48.5 million in funding to support 133 projects.”

Previous funding rounds supported the ABC TV program Carbon Cops; safe and sustainable cleaning in childcare facilities, recycling services for high rise housing; reducing greenhouse emissions from beef and dairy farms; technology that cuts paint and water waste in car manufacturing and a new utility to make buying solar hot water systems easier.

The Sustainability Fund is managed by Sustainability Victoria on behalf of the Brumby Government. For more information, visit www.resourcesmart.vic.gov.au

The Fund also supports sustainability projects in Neighbourhood Renewal Areas, projects outlined in the Environmental Sustainability Action Statement (2006) and projects in partnership with local councils through the Local Government Sustainability Accord.
