Meeting our Transport Challenges

The Victorian Government released its $10.5 billion transport and liveability statement Meeting Our Transport Challenges: Connecting Victorian Communities.

Meeting Our Transport Challenges provides a strategic plan for Victoria's transport system and outlines the Government's short, medium and long-term transport priorities.

Planning sustainable transport options for Melbourne and Provincial Victoria are vital if we are to retain our reputation as being among the most liveable places in the world. What's more, the way in which people move around the State is fundamental to the economic and social health of Victoria. This is why the Government has committed $10.5 billion over 10 years to this transport blueprint, in addition to the $1.6 billion in capital expenditure already committed over the next four years to the transport network.

Building on the Metropolitan Transport Plan and the Provincial Victorian plan Moving Forward, this state-wide Meeting our Transport Challenges strategy delivers:

    • A complete metropolitan public transport network with SmartBus routes and better local bus services to complement established train and tram networks.
    • A comprehensive program of improvements to the train network that will fix bottlenecks and allow more services to be introduced, for both metropolitan and Provincial Victoria.
    • A package to reduce road congestion on the Monash-West Gate freeway corridor.
    • More trains and better connections to public transport for Provincial Victorians.
